I’m on the train on my way home from Mühltal, where Riese & Müller gathered its dealers for its inaugural Campus Days and unveiled the 2027 line-up. It’s a meaningful year for the brand – a brand-new lightweight range, a completely redesigned family cargo bike, and useful updates running right across the established models. Here’s what stood out, and what it means if you’re thinking about your next bike.
The Riese & Müller Veya: a properly light e-bike
The headline is an entirely new range. The Veya starts under 20kg – light for a fully equipped e-bike with lights, mudguards and a rack, and a real shift for a brand whose bikes have always prioritised solidity over saving grams. The frame is aluminium offered as a classic diamond frame or a low-step through, in four sizes from S to XL.
What makes the Veya interesting is how configurable it is. The range runs from a light, simple commuter on Bosch’s compact Performance SX motor up to the more powerful CX, with a removable Bosch battery in either 360 or 600 Wh depending on how you want to balance range against weight. There’s a new dusty purple alongside slate grey and magnesium.
For anyone who has tried a Riese & Müller and found it more bike than they wanted to lift onto a car rack or carry up a flight of stairs, this is the one to wait for. Riese & Müller’s schedule has demonstrator bikes arriving early in 2027 and bikes from February, so it’s worth registering interest now.
The Multicharger4: a family hauler that rides like a trekking bike
The other all-new bike is the fourth-generation Multicharger, the brand’s midtail, and it’s been rethought from the ground up. The idea, in Riese & Müller’s own words, is “Charger5 meets Multicharger3” – it borrows the design and the agile handling of the Charger trekking bike, so it carries a family without feeling like a barge.
Practical touches abound. The lowered top tube is now standard with two frame sizes which makes getting the right fit easier. There’s a redesigned Safety Bar that opens and doubles as a step, so children can climb aboard themselves. It will take up to 200kg all in, with 80kg on the rear rack, and runs Bosch’s 800 Wh battery – with the option of a second 800 Wh pack behind the seat tube for 1,600 Wh if your journeys demand it. Five equipment kits let it be set up for children, cargo or multi-day touring, there’s a new tierra colourway, and a more affordable FAMILY model.
This is the kind of bike that can stand in for a second car on the school run and the weekly shop, without the length of a long-tail or the turning circle of a front-loader. Test bikes are due in February 2027, with bikes to follow in March.
Updates across the established ranges
The bikes you may already know have been sharpened rather than reinvented, and there are some worthwhile changes.
The Charger5 gains a new silent CORE model that lowers the entry price, a touring pro variant with Shimano DI2 electronic shifting and an automatic mode, and two new colours in maroon and lavender. The Nevo5 – the low-step all-rounder – adds a back-pedal-brake (rücktritt) CORE variant for those who want the simplest possible ride, plus new moss and golden yellow finishes. The Swing5, the relaxed Dutch-style city bike, finally gets disc brakes on its vario and automatic models, which is a step up in stopping power and control in the wet.
On the cargo side, the Load5 front-loader is now available with Pinion’s sealed gearbox drive and an 800 Wh battery, expandable to 1,600 Wh for serious distance. And the compact Carrie2 adds a dedicated FAMILY model set up for carrying children along with options for Magura’s integrated braking system and a dropper seatpost, and a new denim colour. It has also earned an A rating in the French Cyclescore, which measures how sustainably a bike is made – fitting for a brand that builds in Germany and sources most of its components from Europe. Most of these updates are scheduled for August 2026.
More torque and more range
Two technical developments are worth knowing about. Bosch’s Performance Upgrade 2.0 can be unlocked through the eBike Flow app on the latest CX and Cargo Line motors, taking them up to 120 Nm of torque and 600% assistance – a noticeable difference on hills and under load. And for bikes running Pinion’s MGU (Motor.Gearbox.Unit), there’s a neat new range extender: a 1.6kg, 240 Wh battery that mounts at the bottle-cage point and locks in place, for extra miles when you need them. The RX Connect app, which handles the built-in tracking and alarm, also gains an iOS widget so you can arm the bike and check the battery from your phone’s home screen.
