The benchmark longtail cargo bike. Tern's GSD Gen 3 carries 210kg, two children or an adult passenger, and parks upright in a hallway.
The Tern GSD is the longtail that the rest of the cargo bike market is measured against. The third-generation bike carries 210kg all in, takes two children or an adult passenger on the back, and still occupies the same floor space as a regular bike – less, once you stand it on its tail. If you want one bike to do the school run, the weekly shop and a weekend ride with the kids, this is the one to try first.
That said, the GSD is the premium option in Tern’s range for a reason. If you’ll mostly be carrying one child and some shopping, the HSD or Quick Haul Long will do the job for a good deal less money, and we’ll tell you so.
Who is this bike for?
The GSD is perfect if you:
- Want to replace the family car – Two children in the Clubhouse, or an adult on the back, plus panniers for everything else
- Carry heavy loads regularly – 100kg rear rack capacity and 210kg gross vehicle weight, with a frame built for it
- Share a bike between riders – One frame size fits riders from 150cm to 200cm (4’11“ to 6’7“), with tool-free adjustment
- Live somewhere hilly – The Bosch Cargo Line motor delivers 85Nm of torque and up to 400% assistance, which matters when you’re hauling 60kg of children up a long climb
- Ride longer distances – Two battery bays on every model, with up to 1,600Wh on the R14
- Have limited storage – Parks vertically on its rear rack, and the handlepost folds flat without tools
Everything at a glance
- Bosch Cargo Line motor (85Nm) – the smart system on the P00, S10 and R14; the P10 uses the previous-generation Bosch system
- 210kg max gross vehicle weight, 100kg rear rack capacity, 130kg max rider weight
- Dual battery bays – 500Wh or 545Wh as standard, up to 1,090Wh with a second battery (1,600Wh on the R14)
- 20“ wheels on Tern’s extra-wide Atlas rims with puncture-protected Schwalbe tyres
- Suntour suspension fork, with a Cane Creek suspension seatpost on the S10 and R14
- Magura four-piston hydraulic disc brakes
- Bosch eBike ABS on the S10 and R14
- Atlas Lockstand dual-leg kickstand with remote unlock
- Ignis headlight and RearStop brake light, powered from the main battery
- Frame lock keyed alike to the battery, plus Bosch eBike Lock through the Flow app on the smart system builds
- One frame size, 49cm standover, fits riders from 150cm to 200cm
- Weighs between 34.6kg (P10) and 38.8kg (R14)
- 10-year frame warranty when registered with Tern Care
Choose your configuration
Four builds are available in the UK. They share the same frame, rack capacity and dual battery bays, so the choice comes down to the Bosch system, gearing, braking and budget:
- P10 – Shimano Deore 10-speed derailleur, PowerPack 500 battery, Purion display – runs the previous-generation Bosch system rather than the smart system, which is part of why it costs £1,200 less. Still the build most families should start with
- P00 – Enviolo Heavy Duty stepless hub with a Gates Carbon belt drive, 545Wh battery, Purion 200 display – no chain to oil, no gears to think about
- S10 – Shimano Deore 10-speed, 545Wh battery, Kiox 300 colour display, Bosch ABS, Cane Creek suspension seatpost, 700-lumen high/low beam headlight and a USB-C charging port – the same price as the P00, so you’re choosing between belt drive and ABS
- R14 – Rohloff E-14 electronic 14-speed hub with Gates Carbon belt, 800Wh battery, Kiox 300, Bosch ABS, suspension seatpost – as low-maintenance and as capable as a cargo bike gets, priced accordingly
If you’re torn between the P00 and S10, think about where you’ll ride. The ABS is worth having if you’ll regularly be braking hard downhill with a full load. The belt drive wins if you’d rather never clean a chain again.
Accessory options
The GSD is built around Tern’s passenger and cargo system, so the bike you buy is really the starting point:
- Clubhouse (Gen 3) – £210 – Rear enclosure for up to two children, converts to open cargo space
- Storm Shield (Gen 3) – £230 – Weather canopy for the Clubhouse
- Storm Box (Gen 2) – £230 – Side-opening weatherproof compartment for children or cargo
- Captain’s Chair – £250 – Padded seat with backrest for an adult or older child
- Cargo Hold 52 Panniers – £265 – 104 litres of weather-protected storage
- Transporteur Rack – £165 – Front rack for up to 20kg
- Cargo Tray – £85 – Rear platform for bulky loads
We’ll help you work out which combination suits your passengers and your journeys when you come for a test ride.
The longtail everyone else copied
Tern launched the original GSD in 2017, and most of the compact longtails that have appeared since owe it something. The third generation keeps the formula – small wheels, low centre of gravity, a bike-length footprint – and adds the stiffer frame, bigger brakes, ABS option and dual battery bays that heavy daily use demands. It costs more than the HSD and a lot more than the Quick Haul Long. For families who will put serious miles on it with serious loads, that difference is easy to justify.
